Tenement apartments in the beginning of 20th century were smaller and dangerous.

A tenement is multi-occupancy building of any sort, but particularly a run-down apartment building or slum building. In these apartments used to live people of an economic lower class. One apartment usually consisted of two or more living families and a lot of crime happened in this specific area.
