In Chapter 13 of The Scarlet Letter what crime does Hester commit, which, if known by other Puritans, would have resulted in her death?

Although this ''crime'' is committed throughout the later chapters but is initiated in Chapter 13, it is that she begins to abandon the idea's and values of the Puritan Society and becomes more free-minded, which if known by others, would result in far deadly punishment than she had ever experienced; death.
