The answer is 4. 4 + 4 = 8, then the parentheses make it negative. correct me if I'm wrong.

- 8 = - ( x + 4)

Distribute the - sign:
- 8 = -x - 4

Add 4 to both sides:
-4 = -x

Divide both sides by -1:
4 = x


Answer: x = 4
