Smart quotes are fancy quotes that point different directions and can be seen in typeset material. In Microsoft Word, you can access this option by simply clicking on the File tab, Options, Word Options and then click on the Proofing tab. You should go ahead and click on the AutoCorrect option box. Click on the AutoFormat tab and under the Replace section heading, uncheck the box next to straight quotes with smart quotes
