Question:

Expand and simplify 5(x - 1) - 3(x + 4)

Answer:

1.) Use the distributive property to solve this equation:

5(x - 1) = 5x - 5

3(x + 4) = 3x + 12

2.) Put it in the equation:

5x - 5 - 3x + 12

3.) Group them:

5x - 3x - 5 + 12

4.) Simplify:

2x - 7
which is the answer.

So first it’s 5x-5-3x-12( got this using distributive property)
Now we simplify by combining like terms so 5x-3x=2x
And -5-12=-17
Ending to be 2x-17
