How and Why did the Alien and Sedition Acts "backfire" on their Federalist proponents?

Since these 2 acts allowed citizens of the US to be tossed out of the country, or locked up, without due process, political opposition came into play, and individuals that could have made a good contributions to the USA were forced out of the country.
