Why was this event so damaging to the unions and workers movement?

referring to Union violence in the United States.
The union violence sent the wrong message toward the public eyes on what the worker's movement was trying to achieve.
this event makes the workers union seems like a thoughtless and violent organization while initially it's established to create a fair working condition for the labors.
