I believe this may result in the cancer cell avoiding destruction by keeping a step ahead of the immune system. The glycocalyx also known as the pericellular matrix, is a glycoprotein and glycolipid covering that surrounds the cell membranes of some bacteria, epithelia and other cells. The cancer cell glycocalyx may regulate the ability of therapeutic ligands to bind to CTCs in the bloodstream.
