The square root of 8, written as [tex]\sqrt{8}[/tex] or sqrt(8), is irrational. We cannot represent this as a fraction of whole numbers.

Contrast this with something like sqrt(25) = 5, which is rational since 5 = 5/1 is a fraction of whole numbers.
