[tex](ab)^c=(a^c)(b^c)[/tex] and
[tex]x^{-m}= \frac{1}{x^m} [/tex]
so
[tex](-2)^{-3}= \frac{1}{(-2)^3}= \frac{1}{(-1)^3(2)^3}=\frac{1}{(-1)(8)}=\frac{1}{-8}=\frac{-1}{8}[/tex]
