The given quadratic equation is expressed as

x^2 - 2x = 1

The first tep is to find the square of half the coefficient of x.

The coefficient of x is - 2

Half of the coefficient of x is 2/2 = - 1

The square of 1 is (- 1)^2

We would add the square of half the coefficient of x to both sides of the equation. It becomes

x^2 - 2x + (-1)^2 = - 1 + (- 1)^2

(x - 1)^2 = - 1 + 1

(x - 1)(x - 1) = 0

x = 1 twice
