Why are Quebec and Ontario called the heartland of Canada?

They are the largest provinces in Canada in terms of population area, and GDP. They are also dominant in terms of political, economic, cultural and, historic influence. Even though by area and time zone they are eastern, they are considered "Central Canada", with four provinces to the east and four to the west.
