Compound is a pure substance containing two or more elements that are chemically combined in a fixed ratio but mixture is made up of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.

The way my chemistry professor explained it was compounds are from the same side (nonmetals), so they don’t necessarily mix well. It would be different if it was an ionic bond, because ionic bonds are when metals and nonmetals mix.
