Some historic mining practices were very destructive. Yet, modern mining can also have a big impact on the natural environment. Most mines generate tailings, which are sometimes unsightly, but overall, don't hurt the environment. Other tailings can be hazardous, affecting streams and water quality. Abandoned mines also pose problems, so modern mines are always reclaimed under law.
