Empresario Haden Edwards-led colonists proclaimed independence from Mexican Texas. Near Nacogdoches, in December 1826, they founded the Republic of Fredonia. The uprising prompted Mexican President Guadalupe Victoria to raise the military presence in the city. The Fredonian Revolt is considered by some historians to be the beginning of the Texas Revolution. In 1827, to restore order, a force of over 100 Mexican troops and 275 Texian militia marched in.
