It is very important that surface area is increased in the small intestine in order to increase the absorption capacity of the small intestine.

Explanation:

Surface area of small intestine is increased by a finger like structure called villi. The main function of villi is to absorb nutrients from the food materials and send these nutrients to the blood vessel which is present near to it. So with the increase of surface area of small intestine, it enables the body to absorb more nutrients from the food.
