Antagonistic muscles Muscles can contract and make themselves shorter. However, muscles cannot make themselves get longer. To bend the arm, the biceps contracts (gets shorter) and the triceps relaxes. ... The contracting biceps muscle makes the arm bend at the elbow joint.
