"Manifest destiny" was the term that John O'Sullivan coined in the mid- 1800's, which epitomizes the idea of driving to expand. What he meant was that the United States was destined by God himself to expand from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific, spreading democracy and implementing capitalism in every corner of the continent, bending the will of whoever got in the way if necessary.
