The answer is the Missouri Compromise. This occurred when America acquired more
territories due to the Louisiana Purchase. When Missouri wanted to be admitted to
the Union, legislators were worried because it would upset the balance between
slave state and Free State. This was
resolved when Maine was admitted as a Free State thereby maintaining the
balance.
